Texas Jazz Heritage- Only a few of the great jazz singers from the Golden Age of Jazz are still with us.
Louise Tobin is considered one
of the great big band singers of the golden age of jazz music. Tobin, a native Texan, began her musical
career at age 14 singing with society bands throughout Texas . At age 15, singing with the Art Hicks a band, a brash 17-year
old trumpet player was hired, phenomenal musician, Harry James. The two teenagers eloped
and made their way to New York
. Louise went on to become the vocalist for Benny Goodman, the King of Swing. She is alive and well at age 92 and working with Debbie Porter and
historians at Texas
A&M-Commerce to tell her wonderful stories. |
